UX Website Design and Development

Building a platform for a city-wide movement of youth-led leadership

SY-NC needed a user-centred website for the roll out of its city-wide project, transforming marginalised communties through community-led development.

The website was designed to challenge and dismantle old narratives of inequity by fostering dynamic relationships between city leaders and the community through SY-NC’s programs and initiatives.

The Story

Increasing numbers of children, young people and families within Sheffield are adversely affected by high poverty levels, serious violence, school exclusions, mental health issues, exploitation, and offending, driven by inequality in the city.

Given the scale and complexity of issues that young people face, there is a need and an opportunity to collaborate across both statutory and community partners to develop a shared purpose and approaches to working with young people in their communities.

The SY-NC project aims to develop skills and capacity by bringing together and supporting Area Hubs in key areas of Sheffield.

For SY-NC, the UX design aimed to create a digital platform that not only serves as a hub for young people, local organizations, and community leaders but also reflects the centre’s mission to counteract the normalization of exploitation with a culture of support and opportunity. The website was designed to be an inclusive environment where users can access valuable resources and opportunities, while also functioning as a channel to break down barriers between city leaders and the community.

Our approach began with in-depth user research, to understand needs and aspirations of the communities SY-NC serve. This research informed the development of a clear information architecture, making essential resources such as community initiatives, and youth programs readily accessible.

In alignment with the project’s mission, the website was crafted to nurture inclusivity and support, offering a space where every user feels valued. Additionally, the platform was designed to challenge and dismantle old narratives of inequity by fostering dynamic relationships between city leaders and the community through SY-NC’s programs and initiatives. Mobile responsiveness and accessibility were key considerations, ensuring that the platform is easily navigable by all users, including those with disabilities. By embedding these values into the design, we aimed to create a space where young people can thrive, barriers between communities and leaders are dismantled, and equitable opportunities are promoted.
